Lance's First Day of Kindergarten

I wish he could stay "little" forever, but I know he can't. I have been dreading this day for a while now. It is hard to let go . . . especially after I have been able to be with him every day for the past five years. I haven't missed a moment. I haven't been worried about how Lance would adapt to kindergarten . . . I knew he would love it. I have been worried about how I was going to cope at work without seeing that wonderful smile and hearing "Hey Mommy, come see this"! I shed a few tears on Friday - his last day at preschool. I actually did well today!

We packed his lunch box and his backpack last night. We read The Night Before Kindergarten before he went to bed. Lance started his day with breakfast in bed!!! He was really ready to go! He was as talkative as usual all the way to school. Once we got to school, we were walking down the hall together and his little hand reached for mine. I think he was a nervous, even overwhelmed. We got to his class and were greeted by his student teacher. She gave him an Olympics name tag. He then went into his classroom. Ms. Seibert (aka Ms. Patricia) showed him where to hang his backpack. He was really quiet, which worried me. We said our goodbyes and gave hugs and kisses. Then I left (wow was that hard to do)!!!

Thankfully, I was told that his nap mat was included in his supply fee but it wasn't. So, I had to run to Wal-Mart to get him a mat. When I returned to school, I was just going to leave the mat in the office but I saw his class walking down the hall. He was the "line leader" . . . he saw me and waved. His teacher told me he was her best listener so he got to be the line leader. He looked so little walking down the big hallway with his lunch box in hand. I took his mat to his room and left.

Scott left work early so he could pick Lance up with me. We both couldn't wait to see him and hear about his day. We bypassed the line of traffic, parked, and walked up to the school to get him. He came out and held Scott's hand. Then, he grabbed my hand. We all walked hand and hand to the car. We had a balloon and card waiting for him. We were so proud of him! He seems to really like it. He is ready to go back tomorrow. He did talk a little about PE in the gym, touring the school, playing outside twice, and playing with play dough. I think he is still taking his time and checking it all out. We have open house on Thursday night, so I am looking forward to hearing what his teacher has to say.

Being a parent is tough . . . I can't handle this growing up stuff. He will always be my baby! He is a great kid. I am really proud of him. I sure am going to miss him at Ozarka though . . . it is going to be a long, lonely ride to Melbourne now.

WOW! You all had an exciting day! I find it amusing listening to parents stories about the first day of kindergarten. I suppose I shall find out soon enough what it is like to leave my own little one with someone else rather than be the person they are left with. I am sure he is having a ball. Maybe you should try to get a teaching job???
